Sticky Bun French Toast

We all know I love sweets.  And if you haven’t figured that out yet, you most likely are new to the site.  This sweet treat is a heavenly way to begin your day.  It’s not nearly as hard to make as it sounds and your guests/loved ones will be overjoyed at the aromas coming from the kitchen.  This dish is best when you prepare it the night before.

Ingredients:

1/2 c. butter
1 c. brown sugar
2 Tbsp. light corn syrup
1/2 c. coarsely chopped pecans
8 slices day-old French bread (at least one inch thick)
6 large eggs
1 1/2 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. cinnamon
dash of nutmeg

Over medium heat, melt butter with brown sugar.  Add syrup and stir constantly until thickened, about 2 minutes.  Stir in nuts.  Pour into a 9 x 13 inch baking pan.  Arrange bread on top in one layer.

Whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg until well blended.  Pour over bread.  Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Following day preheat oven to 350 and bring dish to room temperature.  Bake, uncovered until golden on top and crispy around the edges, about 50 minutes.  Remove to oven and let set for 5 minutes.  When serving, invert each piece so you can see the lovely nuts.

Sometimes I will keep the leftovers, not for breakfast, but for a sweet treat later in the day.  I forgot to take a photo when I made these so please forgive me.  I have included a picture of one of the greatest pop records made that includes a song called “Sticky Bun.” It too is full of sweet gooey goodness.
