Julie and Julia
Tonight I had the privilege to see an advanced screening of Sony Pictures release “Julie and Julia”. It was a delight.
I, like many of you, adore Julia Child. Her story coming to the big screen, albeit only a portion, was something I had been looking forward to for the last year. It was worth the wait! Meryl Streep continues to amaze me with her acting skills. She has played many of my favorite roles through the years–Miranda Priestly, Karen Blixen, Joanna Kramer, Aunt Esme Dauterive, and Francesca Johnson to name a few–so I was equally as excited to see what she did for Julia. You forget it’s Ms. Streep up there, she truly embodies Julia Child. I laughed out loud and even got misty eyed on several occasions. She makes you feel that we are participating in each activity as Julia’s friend. From learning to cook, to suffering the challenges of the publishing world, to the McCarthy nonsense, I felt I was her girlfriend. Supporting her and wanting only the best for Julia. Ms. Streep made this emotion possible. I cannot imagine anyone else playing the role.
Of course I found great comfort in Julie’s story. She started a blog because she wanted to do something that would take her mind off the day job. She chose cooking as her subject matter because it was reliable and made her happy. Her man helped her get started. She was anxious about hitting an age milestone. Any of this sound familiar to those of you who have been with me from the beginning? I enjoyed her journey as she strove to find something else. We all seem to be seeking that something else.
I believe there is a Julia Child inside all of us. The film is a lovely tribute to ladies who love their kitchen, love their husbands and seek joy in all facets of their life. I hope every day I live a happy and a satisfied life as Julia did.
