Janet’s Gateau

Janet's angry you haven't tried her recipe. I found a fabulous cook book from the 1960’s that Dinah Shore put together by gathering recipes from her celebrities friends. It is an engaging read as she printed each recipe as the celeb wrote it–complete with comments, letterhead and personal messages to Dinah. I do love reading and rereading this book. Today I am sharing one from Janet Leigh. Her note to Dinah included this message–“In spite of its fancy name, this is really an old-fashioned yellow cake, the kind that goes so well with homemade ice cream.” I loved that message and love making this Gateau Dore.

1/2 c. butter
1 c. sugar
2 c. cake flour (use Swan’s)
3 tsp. baking powder
4 egg yolks
1/2 c. milk

Preheat oven to 350. Cream butter well, add sugar, continue beating, add yolks beaten light, add 1 tsp. vanilla, mix thoroughly, then add milk alternately with the flour and baking powder mixed. Beat and place in greased and floured pan, bake 35 to 45 minutes.
