Please Set the Table
Learning how to set the table properly is a skill we should be teaching in schools. Oh wait, we once did, when we had Home Economics class. It is my understanding that many of schools are phasing out Home Ec as we once new it. Quite the disappointment to me because not only do I believe the lesson plan of Home Ec is critical knowledge for young women everywhere, but I fondly remember my Home Ec teacher–Miss Baylor. She signed her notes on our papers, GMB (her initials). She always was very well dressed but more importantly, it was always so well put together. Perfectly coiffed with a million dollar smile, I learned a lot about the kitchen, manners, how to treat others, the proper way to sit, and lessons I would not realize until I became an adult. Today I share the lesson on how to properly set a casual table. Yes, there are formal ways that include more utensils, glasses, plates but today it’s just the basics. I will write about my dear GMB frequently and share the knowledge she taught me. In my eyes, she is one of the original fabulous modern women who can do it all and have it all.
1. The knife blades always face the plate.
2. The napkin goes to the left of the fork or on the plate.
3. Drinks sit to the right of the plate.
4. The bread and butter plate with knife are optional but if you use them, they go to the left of the plate above the fork.
A well set table is the prelude to any successful dinner party or meal. It sets the tone for the main players–the food!
